Barbara Mathes Anderson, 92, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa died on May 25, 2010 in Cornwall, NY where she had made her home with her daughter Patricia and son-in-law Robert Hershberger since 2005.

Mrs. Anderson was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, pastorís wife, and friend. She was born October 15, 1917 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Agnes Kirk Mathes. On April 12, 1942, she married Ardeth Anderson at Smyrna Friends Church near Weldon, Iowa.

After the death of her mother in a flu epidemic while she was just a toddler, Barbara was cared for by her grandparents, Robert and Jane Livingston Kirk. She grew up in close proximity to her father and his wife, Elsie, along with their seven children.

She attended a one-room rural school during her elementary years. She graduated from Normal School with a teaching certificate, and then went on to complete a bachelorís degree from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, IA. After moving with her family to the Mt. Pleasant area in 1955, she taught for over twenty years at the local high school.

She loved writing poetry, traveling, sketching, carving, rock collecting, flower arranging, quilt making, creating bookmarks from pressed flowers, and guiding country school tours at Midwest Old Threshers.

She is survived by her four children, David Anderson and his wife, Judy, of Xenia, Ohio; Marvin Anderson and his wife, Penny, of Weston, Colorado; Patricia Hershberger and her husband, Robert, of Cornwall, NY; and Kathryn Rummage and her husband, Aaron, of LaPlata, MD; three sisters. Mary Margaret Feusner, Freda Slawson, and Joy Schwartz; a brother, Wilbur Mathes; six grandchildren, Robert Rummage, Christy Rummage Bethay, Brent Hershberger, Joel Hershberger, Lane Hershberger, and Ryan Anderson; and 13 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ardeth Anderson; brother, Wallace Mathes; and sisters, Ruth Lucas and Dorothy Blydenburgh.

Family will receive friends from noon until service time on Tuesday, June 1st, at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Services will follow at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home with the Dr. Aaron Rummage and the Rev. Robert Hershberger officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Creek Cemetery near Salem.
